Field evaluation of segregating and advanced breeding lines for high yield potential, nutritional quality, and biotic/abiotic stress tolerance in wheat

Description of the topic

Field evaluation of segregating and advanced breeding lines for high yield potential, nutritional quality, and biotic/abiotic stress tolerance in wheat and will be exposed to the different methodologies used for the analysis of wheat quality, including the interpretation of the results obtained

Objectives

1) Learning field based phenotyping for physiological traits, agronomic and yield traits and nutritional quality; 2) Learning handling of large genotypic data and gene discovery; 3) Understanding the importance of wheat quality within a wheat breeding program, learning how to perform the most important tests used for the characterization of wheat quality and interpretation of the obtained results

Work expectations

Fully involved in field and lab works related to wheat breeding and in the works performed in the wheat chemistry and quality laboratory

Activities

1) Selection of segregating populations for agronomic and disease resistance traits. Evaluation of stage 1 & 2 yield trials and other advanced breeding lines; 2) Characterization of different bread wheat lines for their quality parameters and interpretation of the obtained results

Required skills

Basic knowledge on genetics, breeding and molecular breeding and ability to work with chemical/biochemical/molecular methodologies in the laboratory
